To New York and Back ……. Global Classroom International Model United Nations

Houssam Hariri High School has always embraced and adopted a big portion of programs or curricula that can inspire students to become better individuals. To have these opportunities is utterly outstanding so we have to take advantage and try our best! One of them is the Model United Nations (MUN), a conference that aims to spread awareness about global issues and to train students on how to carry out peaceful methods when faced with a conflict. It’s a place where we could have debates, improve our life skills, and awaken the diplomat inside of us. Little do we realize how much MUN has changed us for it has developed our research, public speaking, and social skills, and it has awakened hidden skills! This year, our school decided to take it to another level. 12 high school students were chosen to participate in the Global Connecting Classroom Model United Nations (GCI MUN) organized by LAU in New York City, the city of dreams. In other words, it was the first time we were this exposed!

A crowd of 1,700 high-school students from 92 schools in the U.S., Italy, Taiwan, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Uzbekistan, Spain, Turkey, Qatar, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Jamaica, and Lebanon, gathered last May for the closing of the 2017 Global Classrooms International (GCI) Model United Nations (MUN) conference in New York. Operated by the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA), the GCI Model UN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies in which we, students, step into the shoes of ambassadors to debate the globe’s most pressing affairs. The committees were International Atomic Energy Agency, World Health Organization, World Bank, Disarmament and International Security Committee, International Labor Organization, and Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee.

We spent eight breathtaking days visiting attraction sites in NYC and debating in the conference. During this educational trip, we visited various famous places like Top of the Rock, Broadway Theater, Central Park, Times Square, and others. We all left New York with a new cultural experience that wouldn’t have been successful if it hadn’t been for our caring and hardworking advisors and school administrators. On behalf of my friends who experienced this conference, we’d all love to thank them with all our hearts!
