AMMUN XV 2016

Reflection of MUN Chair in AMMUN XV - Jordan

MUN has been a part of my learning experience for the past 4 years. Ever since the 8th grade, I have relentlessly enjoyed stepping in the shoes of various ambassadors from all around the world. Yet this time it was a whole different experience, for I was no ambassador; I was MUN Chair. The HHHS Delegation and I packed our bags, held our passports, jumped on the plane, and travelled 220 km to Amman, the capital of Jordan to attend AMMUN 2016.

AMMUN, the Amman Model United Nations, as I have learned, is a sanctuary for all students who share the same love of debate. I personally come from a diverse family; my dad is Palestinian Australian, and my mom is Algerian. Thus I know the importance of cultural diffusion, and the importance of opening up to people from various backgrounds, as well as proving yourself to the rest of the world. Though ironically, the Lebanese Delegation was merely able to do that, for all Jordanians swooned at our accents. Meeting all these diverse delegates, some from Jordan, others from Dubai, Korea, Saudi Arabia, and even Palestine were my chance to challenge my inner confidence and get out of my comfort zone, especially when I’m chairing delegates of different backgrounds.

“We The Peoples”, being AMMUN XV theme, was surely on the mark since a vast number of students are participating in this international conference. There is one thing, I believe, every person misinterprets, and that is the power of change. Thousands of people mock the idea that a single person can be a factor of change, when in reality they can. Being told that you cannot change the world is merely similar to being treated like you can change the world, and that is what any MUN program is all about. Now imagine if you are a group of people, all with the drive to make the world a better place. Picture the power you possess within your hands as you thrive in resolving practically the most challenging issues our world faces today. We are the leaders of tomorrow; we are the tiniest ray of hope our world has, so why not collaborate in making tomorrow a paradise. It is true MUN is a mock simulation, but the fact that the theme is the same sentence the UN Charter started with stimulates the reality of the program. It is the one ray of hope that maybe, in the future, we can be a part of something bigger, but all we have to do is believe.

As I sit here reflecting, I cannot help but reminisce on what was the most humorous and fun trip of my life. Riding the camels in Petra, dabbing in every photo, ordering pizza in the middle of the night, or even faking British accents in the airport, the HHHS Delegation, my friends, are what made this trip even more memorable than it already is. I can’t thank Ms. Hiba Chamandi, and Ms. Nagham Abou Ali enough for dealing with our constant naggings when it was too cold at night, and for making this experience as amazing as it was.

With that being said, my friends and I now step out as international delegates, able not only to deal with challenging topics, but also to deal with different types of peoples. AMMUN will remain one of those memories that I would gladly share with an open heart, always and forever.
