What is Cushing Syndrome and how it's related to Obesity?

9 Oct 2019

Cushing’s syndrome is a rare condition and one of the adrenal gland diseases with severe symptoms including morbid obesity, moonfaced, hypertension, diabetes, etc. It occurs when the tissues of the body are exposed to high levels of the cortisol hormone for an extended amount of time. It is good to have cortisol at normal levels, but when those levels get too high they cause health problems. Although cortisol is related to stress, there is no evidence that Cushing’s syndrome is directly or indirectly caused by stress, and since obesity may increase the risk of developing this syndrome, the health Club took a step to raise awareness regarding this fatal disease, its serious symptoms, and causes of adrenal gland diseases like: tumors, Pheochromocytoma, Congenital Hyperplasia, Hyperaldosteronemia and Addison's disease. Moreover, an instructive brochure was distributed and an informative session was given to seven and eight graders about obesity and Cushing disease.

At the end, the health club hopes that all learners and teachers will follow the recommendations given by the health club dietitian Mrs. Norma Mahmoud while assessing their BMI and checking with their family doctor in case their BMI's are less than 18.5 or more than 30.
