The Vitamin D Challenge

Getting necessary amount of vitamin D can be challenging particularly during the winter season when sunlight and daylight hours diminish, taking into consideration that the human body can produce it in the skin when exposed to sunlight, namely the ultraviolet radiation UVB. Vitamin D, also called Calciferol, is one of the four fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) stored in body tissues and is considered the only vitamin that can be synthesized by the human body. Other sources include dietary supplements and food that help to top up vitamin D levels such as fortified milk, fortified cereals, fatty fish, cod-liver oil, mushrooms, and egg yolk. Vitamin D helps to keep bones, muscles and teeth healthy, and without vitamin D, it would be difficult to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphorus in the body. Besides, vitamin D plays a crucial role in increasing the cognitive and thinking ability, and a severe lack of the vitamin may cause fatigue, malaise and generalized muscular and bone pain; it may even lead to bone deformities that may imitate the learners’ knowledge during school time.
In order to spread awareness about vitamin D deficiency at our school, HHHS Nursing Department in the cooperation with the biology department conducted an educative session under the title of "The Vitamin D Challenge" to all grade twelve SE learners, who found the topic of great importance since it's related to their Biology lesson. The overall goal of the session was to promote students' healthy lifestyles through reducing risks of illness and fatigue especially during school time and to enhance their knowledge about vitamin D deficiency, its symptoms, the health risks, toxicity, possible treatment and major tips for its prevention. Besides, a detailed brochure was distributed to all students in order to create more awareness about the risk of vitamin D deficiency and to help them adopt healthy living strategies and dietary sources to cut down this risk.
We do hope that our students would take our health recommendations into utmost consideration in order to avoid the lack of vitamin D, and to regularly see their family doctors to inform them about the amount of vitamin D they need to take, the need for supplements and the need for vitamin D level measurement in blood if they were at high risk. Let’s all say NO to vitamin D deficiency and stay HEALTHY.
