"Spring Has Sprung and With It, Allergies and Asthma"

18 Apr 2019

SPRING HAS SPRUNG, so get ready to WELCOME Seasonal Allergies, Asthma, Eczema, Sunburn, Insect bites, and Poison Ivy! As much as we crave the warmness of spring during the cold, wet winter months, the season flowers and bees can be an absolute nightmare for allergy sufferers. For those people, spring means four long months of sneezing, watery eyes, and stuffy noses, which will make going outside and frolicking through the tulips next to impossible. In fact Asthma symptoms affect an estimated 26 million Americans and are one of the leading causes of work and school absences. Since Asthma and allergic symptoms may cause breathing problems that may be fatal, an educative informational session under the title of "Spring Has Sprung and With It, Allergies and Asthma" was conducted to all 7th graders in the Middle School Division who found the topic of great importance since it's related to their Biology lesson. The overall goal was to promote students' healthy lifestyles through reducing risks of allergies and asthmatic attacks, bronchial asthma, rhinitis especially during school time in an attempt to enhance their breathing and diminish absenteeism from school. This session has enhanced our learners' knowledge and taught them the tips on how to prevent attacks, be aware from allergens, and check with their family doctor for PRN medications for rapid management in case of urgent severe reactions! Moreover, in an attempt to raise awareness about Asthma at our school, M&S HHHS Health Club has organized several activities to the middle school students through creating posters, asking thoughtful questions in the recesses for learners in a health tent, raising awareness to all interested learners and decorating bulletins in the middle school. Besides, educational handouts were distributed to raise the awareness of students about the tips of using inhalers, treatment and prevention of asthma in which help the school community know the signs of breathing difficulties, rapid management of mild and severe allergic symptoms and prevent diseases by following nursing education.
