Grade 6 End of Year Project

13 July 2015

The student is never really learning Mathematics until he or she has learned that the beauty of Mathematics lies not only in its form but in its utility in the real world. Bearing in mind this fact, the students of grade 6 were involved in an end of year project that required them to culminate several interrelated concepts together in one incorporated piece of work, designing a scale model. The students put together their knowledge of concepts like scales, proportions, mensuration and their skills in calculation and construction to create scale models of their favorite object. To do so, the students worked in groups and demonstrated their ability to collaborate and communicate in order to come up with a well-planned and well-designed structure that meets mathematical standards. The project also gave the students the chance to allow their imagination go wild, as some students decided to create models of their dream house, dream car, or their favorite locations. The experience was very rewarding for the students, to the extent that some students were calling themselves the future engineers.
