A Learning Journey in KG 2 A
How exercises help us grow?
What do I have to eat to have strong muscles?
Why should we drink milk?
Why should we sleep early?
Where is the germ?
Why can’t we eat a lot from the chocolate?
What happens if I do not eat fruits?
These questions and many other tensions buzzed through the KG 2 A classroom as we worked on Health and well-being under the transdisciplinary theme Who we are. We had an engaging, challenging, action-packed, and inquiry-driven learning journey throughout the unit.
Our central idea, “The choices people make affect their health and well-being.” helped to drive our inquiry. We were inquiring into what it means to have a healthy life style, how the choices we make affect our health, and what sources of information help us to make choices.
As learners explore the central idea and lines of inquiry through various tuning in and finding out activities, they were continuously reflecting on the balanced choices they were applying to have a healthier life-style. Going further, learners were involved in visiting the health club to inquire about the importance and the impact of exercising, interviewing the nutritionist to inquire about the impact of the each food group and surfing through the net to inquire about the importance of drinking water and getting enough sleep. This unit motivated our young learners to take action inside and outside the school; they start to add vegetables to their breakfast on daily basis, watch themselves, as well as, remind their friends to cover their mouth/ nose while coughing/ sneezing then directly wash the hands with soap and water, drink more water during the day, change their snack to fruits, in addition to, reading the number of KCAL on the juice cans to choose the fewer ones. Parents’ feedbacks during this unit were amazing; they reported that their kids were commenting on their life-style and encouraging them to apply a healthier one by explaining the reasons and the impact.
In the final step of taking action, learners worked in groups to create a flyer and others a chart where they identified the steps for having a healthy life-style. They were advisors; some of them visited nursery and KG 1 classes to present the chart, and others visited grade 1 classes to distribute the flyers among their friends and explain how to be balanced and apply a healthy life-style.
Learners were very busy taking action at school and at home. It was really amazing to note the change and the balanced choices that were applied by our young learners throughout this unit until this day.
