IB In-School Workshop
It is crucial to meet all children’s needs and to provide high teaching and learning standards at this stage of instruction to 21st century learners. For this aim, Houssam Eddine Hariri High School hosted an IB in-school workshop on the 9th and 10th of November 2012, under the title “The Role of Language in the PYP”. Rana Janssen and Hala Fadda, IB workshop leaders, led the workshop that was divided into eight sessions to deepen the understanding of the PYP language beliefs and values where “Language stands at the center of the many interdependent cognitive, affective, and social factors that shape language”.
Hosting this in-school workshop was a significant experience for life-long learning teachers who had the opportunity to reflect on the school vision towards language. Since language is viewed as being flexible and the learner’s acquisition of each is seen on a continuum, the teachers managed to develop their roles as PYP teachers of language(s), set essential agreements on teaching and learning practices that contribute to coherent learning experiences, and consequently to revise the school language policy. The main purpose here was to better support teaching and learning of language in a transdisiciplinary, concept based program of inquiry.
